The merger of United and Continental airlines for $3 billion on the 2nd May has created the worlds largest airline and has expanded the number of flights to Europe out of Newark Airport.

The new airline which will be called simply ‘United’ will shift Delta Airlines into 2nd place as the major carrier to Europe. According to some experts this may have an adverse impact on customers as less competition could equate to higher air fares.

United will serve over 59 countries and 370 airports.

Newark airport will grow in importance as an international gateway, particularly to Europe whilst SFO (San Francisco airport) will also significantly increase its number of international flights.
