Getting to and from the airport is often one of the most stressful parts of any trip.

Public transport can be limited, especially for early morning departures or late-night arrivals, while asking friends or family for a lift isn’t always practical. That usually leaves travellers weighing up two main options: booking a taxi, a rideshare, or driving themselves and paying for airport parking.
However, it’s rarely obvious which option offers the best value. To find out what the numbers really say, we analysed taxi, rideshare and airport parking prices across the 20 busiest airports in the US.
“Across the 20 busiest US airports, parking averaged 44% cheaper than taking a rideshare and 39% cheaper than the median taxi fare”
Comparing the typical cost of getting to and from each airport with the price of leaving your car parked during your trip, we reveal where driving makes financial sense, where ride services come out on top, and how the most affordable option changes depending on where you’re flying from.

- The average cost of airport parking is $50.70.
- Airport parking is 44.15% cheaper than a rideshare.
- By taxi, travelling farther than the downtown area will be more expensive. Airport parking for longer trips may also be more expensive.
Rideshares can remove much of the uncertainty around taxis. Booking can be completed in minutes, and journeys are tracked in real time. This door-to-door experience has made rideshares an attractive choice for business travellers and those taking shorter trips, where convenience can come before cost savings.
Airport parking appeals to travellers who prefer the flexibility of their own vehicle. Use of a personal car means travellers aren’t dependent on driver availability or surge pricing. They can arrive and depart on their own schedule.
Parking is well suited to families, groups, or anyone carrying lots of luggage. Travelling together in one vehicle is often more practical than arranging multiple transport options.

Note: Taxi rates can be difficult to calculate, as areas are subject to different tariffs. Area rates aren’t always reported, and they’re usually presented as large ranges as opposed to a single quote for a rideshare. For fields marked N/A, data for the area was insufficient or not reported.
- As the taxi fares come in ranges, we calculated the median estimation for each to determine the average.
- The average cost of taxi fares is $83.35 in total.
- The average cost of airport parking is $50.70.
- Airport parking is 39.17% cheaper than the median taxi fare.
- By rideshare, travelling farther than the downtown area will be more expensive. Airport parking for longer trips may also be more expensive.
Taxis are still a popular choice for airport trips. They offer the peace of mind that comes with using a trusted local company. Taxi fares are based on meters that follow local rates, so they don’t use the surge pricing that ride-sharing apps sometimes charge. However, the final fare can still vary. Heavy traffic can make the meter run higher, which increases the cost.
Airport parking offers a similar level of convenience. Most parking lots provide free shuttle buses to and from the terminal. You can drive to the car park at your own pace and collect your car when you return. For shorter trips, the total cost is often lower than paying for a taxi to the airport and another one home.
Which Transport Method is Best for Your Trip?
When Is a Rideshare Best?
A rideshare is usually the best choice if you prefer not to drive, and convenience is your top priority. They’re especially good for short trips and solo travellers. With app-based booking, real-time driver tracking and cashless payment, rideshares can make transport very simple.
They also work out well if you don’t own a car or live very close to the airport, where fares are naturally lower. However, keep in mind that prices can rise sharply during busy times due to demand-based pricing. Drivers may not be available in the early hours of the morning, especially mid-week.
When Is a Taxi Best?
A taxi is often the better option for travellers who value reliability and prefer a fixed transport provider over an app-based service. Unlike rideshares, taxis aren’t subject to the same surge pricing model, making them a more dependable choice during periods of high demand, major events or poor weather.
They’re also ideal for those who prefer to pre-book with a local operator or need guaranteed availability. Taxis are generally the cheaper choice if your trip is very long (2+ weeks) to avoid a build-up of daily parking rates.
When is Airport Parking Best?
For most four-day trips, airport parking holds the strongest value. Across the 20 busiest US airports, parking averaged 44% cheaper than taking a rideshare and 39% cheaper than the median taxi fare.
Airport parking is cheaper if reserved in advance, too. And it’s particularly cost-effective for families, groups and anyone travelling with bulky luggage. Everyone can travel together in one vehicle without paying for multiple rides.
Airport parking also gives travellers more flexibility, allowing them to leave and return whenever they choose. There’s no risk around driver availability or paying higher fares during peak periods.
For anyone taking a short-to-medium-length trip and planning to drive, the data suggests airport parking is often the cheaper option.

Methodology
- We used Wikipedia to identify the 20 busiest airports based on passenger numbers.
- We used TaxiFare to estimate taxi and rideshare fares for each route.
- We used Airport Parking Reservations to compare parking prices for Tuesday, September 8, to Saturday, September 12. Prices reflect advance booking rates available on July 1, 2026.
- We only included parking lots that offer a free shuttle to the airport. This helped keep the comparison focused on convenience and avoided extra travel costs.
- Taxi, rideshare, and parking prices can change based on traffic, demand, and booking time. All prices are estimates collected during the research period.
- We used each city’s City Hall as the starting point for fare comparisons from downtown areas. If a City Hall wasn’t available, we used a nearby municipal building instead.
