Liverpool Airport Guide

Situated just seven miles south of Liverpool City Centre and right next to River Mersey, the Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the UK's longest running airports having opened its doors in 1933. Today, the airport is one of the leading providers of low cost airline travel, as well as seeing more than 4.2 million passengers in 2013.

Not Your Typical Airport

Liverpool Airport may not be one of the biggest, but they cram a lot into their little part of the world. Whether you need souvenirs, last minute gifts, or you're just trying to pass the time between your arrival and your flight then you need to check out the shops available.

Heidi & Pearl is the airport's newest member and it's the UK's first and only airport beauty bar!  Choose from a variety of blow dry styles that are guaranteed to take less than 30 minutes. Do you just need some relaxation? Get your nails done! Professional manicures and pedicures are sure to make you completely ready for your travels. This is all done while you're waiting for your flight.

Common Complaints

The most frequent complaint from online reviews stems from Liverpool's penchant to charge patrons to pick up and drop off their passengers. You don't have to pay, but the walk-in drop off is a good five to 10 minute walk from the airport. This clearly won't work with elderly people or when there are young children in tow. If you drive up to drop off or pick up, there is no way out of the fee; you get charged £2 just to leave the car park.

Other complaints range from dirty bathrooms to surly staff, but the majority of the reviews are regarding the fees for dropping off and picking up passengers.

Have Some Fun

Waiting for your flight to leave is never all that fun, so why not pay a small fee and enjoy the benefits of the lounge? Many people are mistaken in thinking that lounges are exclusive to first class passengers, but that just isn't true anymore!

The Aspire Lounge has plenty of amenities to make your wait as comfortable as possible. Once you've made it through the stress of security, come in and enjoy the complimentary amenities. There's also a full array of premium snacks and desserts, both hot and cold. Everything is freshly prepared, so you can go ahead and toss that old bag of crisps you picked up at the newsstand. Do you really need to take a load off? Enjoy beer, wine, and spirits for no extra charge (except champagne which has an extra change). They do, however, advise to not go overboard with the complimentary alcoholic drinks!

Pass away the time with complimentary magazines and newspapers that you can take on your flight with you. Surf the Internet or get caught up on business with the free high speed Wi-Fi. Just because you're secluded from the rest of the airport doesn't mean you have to keep track of your flights. There are flight information screens all over the lounge for your convenience.

Because the Servisair Lounge is slightly more upscale, the airport does ask that you dress appropriately for the lounge. Football shirts are strictly forbidden, and it's asked that you dress like you're attending a meal at an executive style restaurant. Unless specified, your stay should last no longer than two hours.

Where to Eat

Food! Is there any better way to pass the time than with a good meal or tasty snacks?

The Kissing Gate Bar and Grill

If you want something a little more fancy than stale sandwiches, then start your trip off right. Warm up with a trio of sausages with a creamy potato mash and caramelized onion gravy. Vegetarian? The mouthwatering sweet potato and falafel burger is yummy with a chunky tomato relish and free-range mayonnaise.

Frankie and Berry's

When you're travelling with kids, you need someplace that's casual and friendly to those picky kids' palates. Echoing the era of the 50s and 60s American diner, you can fill your kids up with greasy burgers and crispy fries. As the harried adult, you can enjoy a frosty pint with your scrumptious house pizza. Before you hop on your plane, enjoy something from the dessert menu like a brownie and ice cream or a chocolate and honeycomb.

Quick Tip for a Faster Travel

If you're in a hurry or travelling with a large group, it might be worth it to take the Fast Track through security. This means you can skip the long waits that are often unavoidable at security queues. This service is indispensable if you're travelling with multiple small children who don't do so well waiting in long lines.

Liverpool airport has high aspirations to be one of the UK's finest airports. With their unique amenities, they're certainly on their way to getting there!
